Citrus Kale Salad: must try!

With an overabundance of kale this last week during Passover, I found this recipe with a fun, healthy twist. It has a lemon, olive oil and honey dressing, topped with avocado and grapefruit. I didn't follow the recipe exactly for measurements and I didn't use soy sauce because it was Passover. Anyway, my rule of thumb with cooking is that you can change things up as long as it comes out edible-- whereas with baking, you really need to follow measurements closely. Therefore, you can make this creation to-taste, with more lemon if you'd like, more avocado if you'd like, and so on.

Additionally, I strongly suggest that you use a grapefruit knife to prep the citrus because otherwise it is hard to get good clean cubes of grapefruit without the pithy white stuff.

It was a light and fresh recipe for spring. Prep time was only about 10 minutes, and then done except for serving it to friends and family! I got the recipe on pinterest, but follow through to this link if you want to take a peek and try it!

Happy kale creations,

Happier Feet: TRY Asics GEL Sneakers

image GEL-Nimbus® 14

While on hiatus for Passover, I encountered a new sneaker for my pained feet. As a fitness instructor, I am always looking for a new answer to tired feet -- Zumba Fitness involves jumping, moving side to side, low-impact dancing (like salsa), toning (squats!), and more. I had been wearing all different sneakers for years, but I have finally found the ultimate foot-friendly cure: ASICS GEL sneakers! They will make your toes and heels feel like they're bouncing in a cloud. See those grey spots on the bottom of the shoe? Those are gel pockets. Each Asics Gel sneaker has these gel pockets in a different place in the shoe for different types of cushioning. I prefer the Nimbus model (I tried a few different models on before coming to this conclusion) because they had less tread, and are aimed to give extra cushion support--making it easier for me to slide side to side.
image GEL-Nimbus® 14
I found that the tread blocks are large/wide and relatively flat-- not a lot of stuff sticking out for ground-grasping purposes...good for sliding on a carpet, for instance.

They were on sale at Foot Locker & Finish Line to $110 and $105 respectively  Full-price on the website comes out to $140. I know that is expensive, but if you're someone who REALLY wears your sneakers religiously, you deserve to give your feet the comfort they need.  You'll be more likely to stay away from injuries if you give your feet a comfy shoe.

PS - Asics used to be the "uglier" sneaker growing up, but now they are NEON and hot to trot. Sold everywhere sneakers are sold. Try them on in the store at least, even if you don't decide to buy. I am saving up for a 2nd pair!

Keep moving--

KIND Plus Chocolate Cherry Cashew Bars

Yum! Fun on-the-go snack

Hi! I decided to contribute to my amazing cousin's blog because it's fun and I like trying new things, sooooo here we go..

Dark Chocolate Cherry Cashew Kind Plus bars are the best because they are delicious, full of antioxidants, gluten-free, rich in vitamins and protein, and only 180 calories! I happen to love chocolate chip cookies with craisins and these taste really similar. They are kosher, low in sodium and contain no trans fats or really anything bad (however, if you are concerned about the fat content, they do contain 9g of fat). I originally tried them on a road trip and had a tough time finding this particular flavor in my neighborhood grocery stores, but I finally tracked them down in Stop and Shop in Long Island. Just as delicious as I remembered. Try it!

Target Capri Tights: Try them!

Xhilaration® Juniors Capri Tights - Assorted Colors
I have always been obsessed with Target brand stuff, but these capri tights take the cake! As many females know, tights and leggings aren't always cheap. However, if you're looking for a cheap fix to add some style or flare to your outfit, try these xhilaration brand capri tights, which come in great colors from your basic grey and black, to the funky pink, purple, blue, aqua, and white. They're only $5 (on sale now for $4) and they're reusable -- not quite disposable. You'll get at least a few wears out of a pair, if not more. Of course they can catch a run like any pair of tights, so it's up to you to keep them in good shape! But for $5, what's the sin in buying some extras to keep in your drawer?

In store, I even saw they had them in 1x size-- so if the Med/Large is too tight, try that next size up. The are technically "juniors," but if my size-10 butt and hips fit into them, I'm sure many of you will be able to, also!

They look great with a pair of flats in the nice weather, or wear a boot and make people think you've got foot-length tights on!

Fun side note: they come in little rolled up packages- also great if you're traveling and need to run to Target for last minute toiletries or something...grab these and throw them in your bag!

Keep your legs lookin' fab,

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bran Muffins: TRY THIS RECIPE!

My awesome roommate Allison made these Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Bran Muffins for us, from the recipe off of this website: www.emilybites.com (this link goes to the recipe). Not only are they delicious, but the perfect consistency of moist and sweet. Not TOO sweet, but just enough that you're thinking, "wow, this bran muffin is tastier than I thought it would be!"

These muffins are filling because of the bran component. They're a great snack that keeps you full for a while. Sidenote: if you're a weight watchers person, this is 5 points per serving on the points plus program. Allison actually cut out the walnuts (because we do not like walnuts in our baked goods) and made the serving size smaller-- we got 16 in the batch, not 12. FYI- she believes this equates with 3 WW points instead of 5 each.

If you love to bake, you've got to try this recipe. I would love to make them for you, but I'm lazy, and that is why I pay to live in a house with roommates like Allison! (But don't count on Julia to whip something like this together, because I am pretty sure she doesn't know how to use our oven...or where to find the baking ingredients.)

Burt's Bees Throat Drops: try them!

I recommend trying the Honey & Pomegranate Burt's Bees throat drops. They have menthol (great for suppressing the cough) and eucalyptus oil (nice soothing smell.) There are no artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners or preservatives. They are really yummy and not too overwhelming to have a few, like many other kinds such as Hall's.

I like supporting Burt's because the bees are a pretty cool species! They pollinate about 1/3 of the fruits and vegetables we eat. You wouldn't have many of your everyday foods without bees (check it out by clicking here).

If you're still trying to kick a cold from this last winter's flu season, pick up some Burt's cough drops at your local drug store or supermarket.

Pure Organic Bar: Try it! Now!

There's nothing better than seeing a new product on the shelf and knowing that if I try it and LOVE it, I get to blog about it! This was NOT the case about the farm-tasting Sheep's Milk Yogurt I ate this week. However, you have GOT to try these Pure organic snack bars! I tried the apple cinnamon this week, and it changed my life! I cannot wait to go back and get more flavors (dark chocolate berry? cherry cashew? wild blueberry? chocolate brownie? cranberry orange? YES PLEASE!)

From their website: "Certified organic, gluten-free, non-GMO, and vegan , Pure Bars provide completely clean and balanced nutrition in an enticing and entirely delicious bar. Made with only simple, real ingredients, Pure Bar will nurture your body, mind, and spirit."

Apple Cinn flavor reminded me of apple cake. My boss said it was like a chewy bar of Charoset (Jews? Passover? Hear Ye Hear Ye!) It had the perfect amount of apples, cinnamon, and walnuts. All said ingredients were organic (listed: dates, apples, agave nectar, walnuts, cashew butter, almonds, rice protein (?), and cinnamon.) I like when I know all (but 1) of my ingredients. Chemicals SUCK!

Find them in Trader Joes, Wegman's, Giant, Genaurdi, select Whole Foods, Essene Natural Foods (near South Street) etc. The coolest place to buy? REI! Going on a camping trip? Get some snax in the store while you gear up.

The one I ate had a wholesome 200 calories. I am on a low(er)-calorie diet, though my brother pointed out to me recently that I could try shifting from eating "lots of low cal snacks" to "less food with higher calories". My point is that once I eat this, I am full for quite a while, as opposed to eating lower calorie snacks and feeling like I need another every 45 minutes!

Let me know if you try it...you won't regret it!

amande ALMONDMILK yogurt: Try it!

amande - cultured almondmilk

My very loyal, food-conscious, pro-food-shopping buddy, blog-reading brother Howard told me to try this product. So please, see what he had to say in his email below, and hopefully you'll want to try this product!

Howard Ross

to me

Subj: possible food for trythisdaily blog
Amande Cultured Almond Milk (aka yogurt)

almond milk yogurt
- dairy free
- soy free
- fruit juice sweetened
- no gmo
- 6 live active cultures

I had the blueberry. It tasks a lot like regular yogurt. The consistency is much better than coconut yogurt which was gooey.
____________________________________________________________________________________

At first it tasted weird, but after a few bites it really grew on me. It's kind of light-weight, more like those whipped JELL-O puddings. But after I ate it, I was definitely in the mood for more! The cherrflavor was delicious. (Howard obviously liked the blueberry.)

FYI- I have a temperamental stomach...so this NON-DAIRY yogurt seems to be a great compromise, since eating live-cultures for female digestive health is the only reason I eat yogurt.  I've only seen it at Whole Foods so far. Next time I go back I'll surely try a few other flavors.

(do we look related??)

cheers,
-lil sis

Level Up: Try it and GET $5 for FREE!

WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? Do you like food? Do you like free stuff? Do you like money that appears in your pocket, which you don't actually need to carry because IT'S HIDDEN IN YOUR PHONE? Sounds like you should TRY this app!

How does it work?

  1. Level Up is an app you can download on your smart phone, and when you use this promo code (SBGEP3), we BOTH get $5 of global credit to use anywhere that Level Up is accepted (and that's in addition to the initial credit you'll have at every place you use it for the first time).
  2. Simply link the LevelUp app to your frequently used debit/credit card (not a scam, it's totally safe, I swear!) and when you go to a register to pay, you simple use the barcode on the app to let them ring you up.
  3. The money is deducted immediately as if you had used your card, but you get PERKS for it instead! Each place offers a different deal. For example, when you spend $50 at the coffee shop, you get $5 free.
  4. You have the option of adding a tip percentage to your total bill amount, also.
Where can you use it? Search for your city HERE! Level up is all over the country! It's a lot of fun to use their map application online to find places in your city, so give it a try!

Places I often use Level Up in Philly:
  • Blackbird Pizzeria
  • Philadelphia Java Co
  • Burger.org
  • Cookie Confidential
  • Nomad Pizza
  • Paddy Whacks Pub
And that's just in a 3 block radius of my house...

Use the special promo code: SBGEP3 for your free $5. My awesome roommate Julia did it, and we both enjoyed free coffee the next day :)

Chobani BITES: Try them!

I have never really been a huge fan of Chobani Greek Yogurt because it usually leaves a gritty feeling on my teeth after I've eaten a regular size serving. However, these 100 calorie Chobani bite yogurts are delicious-- specifically the "Coffee with Dark Chocolate Chips" flavor. They're fat-free, kosher, and small enough that you won't get sick of them after you eat one. In fact, I am already salivating to eat one tomorrow in my lunch! It was not only a healthy snack, but a treat, as well!

Flavors include:
  • Coffee with Dark Choc Chips
  • Raspberry with Dark Choc Chips
  • Caramel with Pineapple Chunks
  • Fig with Orange Zest
I CAN'T WAIT to try them all! Find them in Target, Wegmans, Superfresh, Pathmark, Walmart, and more! They come in 4-packs. But don't worry, you'll love them and will be happy that you've got 3 more left!

Yum yum yum.

POP Corners: Try Them!

Popcorners - White Cheddar

Popcorn in chip-form that doesn't leave kernels stuck in your teeth? YES PLEASE! Try them ASAP...I can't believe I waited this long!

Many people suggested that I try these. I did. You should. The end.

(Kosher, Gluten Free, low-cal if you have the time to separate the right amount out into a "serving", six flavors, available in most supermarkets).

Get a movie, grab a blanket on the couch, and enjoy some pop-cornERS!

Kashi Steam Meals: TRY IT!

Hero
Okay...before you freak out about frozen foods, high sodium, or foods that claim to be "all natural," let's just talk for a moment about this delicious discovery. I understand what is wrong with those three claims, but I also find the value in eating something that is still healthier than fast-food on South Street when I have very little time but want to keep myself in calorie-check. I have recently gone back to using My FitnessPal, a calorie tracking device on my phone which helps me maintain or lose weight with goals that I set for myself. I found this product at my local Shoprite in Marlton, NJ (not yet in Whole Foods or Wegmans, etc.) and was pleasantly surprised. It was something that I could make when I don't have a lot of free time, something that can be tracked in my phone for my calorie app, and fulfill my dose of veggies for dinner- which I typically do not like taking the time to cook. This Kashi product, like their frozen pizzas & cereals, has come in 1st place once again -- at least in my book!

One bag has "two servings" in it.
-->What does this mean for the average person? Eat the whole bag (think: my dad, my brother, etc).
-->What does this mean for the person watching their weight? Put half of it in a bowl for your dinner, and put the other half in a container to take to work the next day for lunch. Note: I did that today.

One serving has around 300 calories and is STOCKED with 14g of protein (great after a workout like I had last night!), which is technically a "meal" -- it fills a bowl and makes you feel full because you are getting your carb-fix with the whole grain pasta in it. Try this easy dinner/lunch option, drink a full glass of water or seltzer with it, give yourself time to digest, and feel good about your decision to eat this instead of fast-food!

Yum.

POP Chips: Try them!

I recently bought mini-bags of popchips, with both original potato & BBQ flavor. I loved the original and highly recommend that you try them! The BBQ weren't my style, but that isn't to say they were bad...that is up to you and your standards of BBQ flavors.

I enjoyed them for the following reasons:
-100 calorie bags make it easy to have guilt-free midday snacks.
-each bag is filled with a lot of chips so you really get to snack for a long time.
-they are vegan, kosher, gluten free, cholesterol free, low fat and affordable.

Sometimes, I feel guilty breaking into a small snack bag of chips because they'll be about 200-300 calories for the whole bag, which could be my entire lunch meal! This snack gives you a LOT inside the bag, for VERY LITTLE calories. Try them next time you go food shopping!

Cinnamon & Agave Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips: TRY THEM!

You have GOT to try these awesome new tortilla chips made by RW Garcia, a company based in San Jose, CA. Their product is VERY new, so it's not on their website yet- but I bought a bag of them at Wegman's in Cherry Hill last week for only 99 cents!

If you can find a supermarket near by that has them, I highly recommend snatching a few bags.  You get 11 chips for only 140 calories, which is pretty filling. They're addictive though, so be careful. As a friend of mine said, they taste "like a donut".

I took that picture myself because I couldn't find one online...but I SWEAR they do exist! Hopefully RW Garcia will start producing them regularly, if this was a trial, I guess!

They're the perfect combo of sweet, healthy, crunchy and "snack" category. They are gluten free and GMO free. We like that around here :) PLEASE let me know if you find them in another store..thanks!

SeaSnax: TRY IT!

My brother recently got me hooked on SeaSnax.  We both have always loved sushi so seaweed is a delicious snack for homies like us. I've seen other brands do the same type of snack, sold in other supermarkets. I'm sure they're delicious too...but anyway, I've only tried this kind. SeaSnax are great, they come in multiple flavors (chipotle, wasabi, classic, spicy onion), and are great for the following other reasons:
  • vegan
  • gluten free
  • GMO-free
  • MSG-free
  • Sugar free
  • low cal (the whole pack is approx 35 calories)
  • all natural "vegetable of the sea"
  • only 100% olive oil added and a touch of salt- nothing else!
It's "strangely addictive" as their website says...and if you don't believe me, check them out here: http://www.seasnax.com/ !

Happy seaweed snacking,

"HAPPIER" (the book), Tal Ben Shahar- READ IT!

If you read 1 book in 2013, you definitely want to read "Happier" by Tal Ben Shahar, Ph.D.! It will open your eyes and rejuvenate your soul for a healthy new year.

Let's make this short and sweet. Why should you read it? I'll tell you why:
  • It is relatively short, with small chapters, and it's an "easy" read.
  • It has tons of real-life examples that you can relate to as you read it, making it easy to understand and easy to retain the information you learn. I walk around quoting it all the time...which I can't really say for novels or other non-fiction pieces that I've read.
  • Most likely, you're unhappy about something- as most people are- and this will help you re-calibrate your priorities and sense of what is really important in the world around you. Fresh starts in 2013!
  • Tal Ben-Shahar is the professor of one of the most popular Harvard psychology classes about positive psychology...reading his book is pretty much a glimpse into that class.
Let me know if you read it, I'd love to talk about it with you!
Happy reading,

Old Navy Compression Leggings: TRY THEM!

In search of the perfect athletic pant/legging duo? Try Old Navy's Compression Leggings for only $26.50 sold in stores and online, in three great colors (black, grey, denim'ish blue). I tried them yesterday and immediately had to buy two of them on the spot. They were awesome for working out yesterday evening, and today I am wearing a pair as regular leggings under a dress with boots. They aren't TOO shiny (like the American Apparel kind) but have just enough shine/opaque mix that they don't LOOK like workout pants if you're wearing them for regular daily use.

They hold everything in at the waist, are flattering (think Lululemon), have a little pocket in the back for your keys or license if you're a runner, and are really true to size. I am a Medium, fit for a size 8-10 on the bottom. Also, just an aside while we're talking about butts... I am not the THINNEST in the butt department, and these were NOT difficult to pull on. Major points for your workout clothes, Old Navy!

Don't be hesitant to purchase work out clothes at Old Navy if you're thinking that the quality may be on the lower end, being that O.N. is known to be Gap's "lower-end" store. I think their active wear is made better than most Old Navy clothing, actually. I own workout clothing from Lululemon, Target, Old Navy, GapFit, Zumba.com, TJMaxx, Nordstrom Rack...the list goes on. I don't judge what company makes the clothing. If it fits well, the price is right, and you feel good while you wear it...buy it! And then buy another so you have a spare set!

Happy online shopping,
-ADR

LUNA FIBER BAR: TRY IT!

In response to the LARA BAR debacle last week, I have found a wonderful solution! This LUNA FIBER bar DOES NOT CLAIM to be a brownie (this is a "soft-baked fruit-filled bar"), yet it pretty much looks & tastes like one! (EPIC FAIL for LARA Bar, who claims to be a brownie and tastes like poop instead).

Try this delicious new and pretty packaged treat- it comes in 3 delectable flavors, and is only 110 calories. It's 70% organic (at least their honest about it, right?), kosher, has 7 grams of fiber, and has the CORE 4 combo: calcium, iron, folic acid and vitamin D.

BEWARE: the only downside I can come up with (after my food-conscious boss and I analyzed the ingredients, of which there are many...) there are a ton of "syrups" in this food. What does that mean? SUGAR SUGAR SUGAR. 11 grams, to be exact. That means nothing for someone like myself who doesn't really watch my sugar intake...I know, that isn't something I am proud of. But it's still healthier than the average bag of chips.

Yum yum yum.

Lesser Evil Chia Crips: TRY IT!

I really wanted to save some for my roommates to try, and while my lips are on fire from the jalepeno and I feel sort of guilty, I ate the whole bag in two days. Maybe not my healthiest snacking habit, but you can't knock someone for snacking when they're home with the flu! You definitely want to try Less Evil Brand's "Chia Crisps". They're filled with fun stats such as:
  • gluten free
  • good source of fiber
  • kosher
  • vegan
  • GMO, MSG, Cholesterol, and artificial flavors FREE
  • their website has a great search app that helps you find where they're sold near you. additionally, the wegman's site will even tell you what they cost this week (2/$5 where I'm from).

Anyway, you get something like 22 crisps for only 110 calories! That's not bad at all. And if you accidentally eat the entire bag..well..that's still less than 500 calories, but who's counting?

And by the way, in case you're wondering what "Chia" is...it's a seed that is rich in omega-3s, antioxidants, calcium, and protein (which helps curb hunger). Check out more details here.

COCO Lite Pop Cakes: TRY THIS

COCO LITE <br>Blueberry Cinnamon Flavor
You'll definitely want to grab a few bags (or a dozen bags) of COCO Lite Multigrain Pop Cakes next time you go to the store! A small discovery that I made when shopping at Wegman's, and a great health-conscious snack decision for those of you who like to keep it low-cal, low-cost, and full of chewing/bites (the more chewing, the more your brain thinks you're "full").

These delicious snacks are similar to rice cakes. I say TRY THEM because they are...
  • Sugar Free
  • Cholesterol Free
  • Preservative Free
  • All Natural
  • Made Fresh
  • Low Calorie (16 calories per piece) = ZERO POINTS on Weight Watchers
  • Vegan
  • Low carbon footprint to Philly (Made in NJ or in your local supermarket daily)
  • Sold for less than $3 a bag, in multiple flavors.
  • Available at Wegman's, Whole Foods, Shoprite, and more! (Check website under "About Us"
I am a fan of the Blueberry Cinnamon kind (featured above). With less than 250 calories in an entire BAG (15 cakes), I like to snack on them throughout the work day. I also suggest them for when you're on the go, with breakfast, as a late-night snack, and so on. Guilt-free snacking for all!

You can purchase them online from the website ($20 for 6 bags, $36 for 12 bags). Flavors include Blueberry Cinnamon, Maui Onion, Whole Wheat, & Original. Want to try them all? Order a multi-box that comes with a few of each flavor!

Happy snacking,

Morning Star Grillers Recipe Crumbles: TRY IT

I recently used Morning Star Crumbles as a meat substitute. I am usually skeptical of food substitutes and anything with chemicals in the ingredients that I am not 100% sure of...but this yummy treat has proven its worth.

I am neither a vegetarian nor a vegan, but I am kosher, which poses a few pieces of information you should understand before reading on:
  • I don't mix meat and milk (no chicken parm, no cheese steak, no meat on my nachos, no cheeseburgers)
  • Kosher meat is more expensive so I don't eat it often
  • I live with non-kosher roommates so it's easier to stay vegetarian most of the time and not worry about the fuss of keeping everything separate
With that said, a colleague of mine recommended using Morning Star Crumbles because I recently mentioned I was making my amazing friend Ali's "Mexican Lasagna", which she grabbed off Pinterest last year for the Superbowl, which I then commissioned her to make for my birthday.

Lasagna finished and cooked (with Allison's smile fries on the side).
____________________________________________________________
WELL- let's just say that Morning Star Crumbles (along with the chick 'n nuggets) has changed my life. Here's why you have GOT TO TRY IT:
  • VERY flavorful
  • NOT too expensive
  • Kosher Certification
  • HIGH in protein (NUTRITION FACTS HERE)
  • Can be used with dairy since it's not REAL MEAT!
  • Low in calories per serving (something like 80 per half cup)
  • 75% less fat than real meat crumbles
  • Available in almost all supermarkets (I've bought/seen it at Target, Wegmans, Shoprite Acme and Superfresh...but not whole foods...booo!).
  • Get it fast...I'm finding that it is the only morning star product that quickly sells out!

Lara Bar Chocolate Chip Brownie: DON'T TRY

On a health kick looking for better mid-day snacks, the LARA Bar grabbed my attention. The word "Brownie" only helped, in addition to it feeling "moist" and soft through the packaging. Fair Trade chocolate, kosher, high in fiber, and my 200 calorie "snack maximum"-- what could be better? Granted, it DOES say that it's a fruit and nut bar- but anything with "Chocolate" and "Brownie" in the title NEEDS to be delicious.

I spit out the first bite. And so did my roommate:

Thank you to ALLISON for playing the "test-taste this nasty food" game.

Lemonaise: TRY IT

Q&B Foods Ojai Cook Lemonaise
I recently purchased The Ojai Cook's Lemonaise at Whole Foods. It wasn't much more expensive than regular mayo, and I liked that it supports a local craft of Ojai, California, where I lived one summer. Additional tidbits that should encourage you to try this product:
  • Organic
  • Kosher (Orthodox Union & Kof K)
  • Natural
  • Flavored
  • Fat Free
  • Cholestoral Free
  • Reduced Calorie
  • Cage-Free Eggs used
